Sunday Morning Coffee Time Chat with Author Abigail Boyd

Welcome to Sunday morning Coffee Chat time!

Today’s guest is Abigail Boyd!

SE: A brand new Sunday – and I can’t believe it is already July! Whew! The summer is flying by! Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to another great Coffee Time Chat! Today we have Abigail Boyd with us! Grab your drinks, oh wait! I need a refill… Okay, got it! We are good to go! Welcome Abigail!

AB: Hello! Thank you very much for taking time to interview me on your blog. I remember reading My Blood Runs Blue about 3 years ago and thinking it was awesome, I need to get caught up on your other books!

SE: It’s funny how time flies and we get so busy. The nice thing about books, they never go away! They are always there! So our first question of the morning…. Coffee or Tea?

AB: I used to be a major coffee drinker but it always made me jittery. I?ve recently started drinking tea pretty much all day long, so my cupboard is stocked with all different varieties. I prefer cold drinks over hot, so I usually just make fridge tea.

SE: Fridge tea I am assuming is like Ice Tea, right? So let’s talk about you for a little while.

AB: I?m a young adult author who has been self-publishing for three years. My longest running series is called the Gravity series, a story about ghosts and romance and a crazy cult. I have three small children and I spend my days balancing a child on one knee and my laptop on another. I like to stay up way too late at night, especially to watch old movies or YouTube videos. So many YouTube videos.

SE: I applaud you for writing with children at home. I know that i is not easy. You have already stated you are an author, but do you work another job when you are not writing?

AB: Sometimes I do freelance work and gigs on Fiverr, but generally I like to keep focused on writing. My husband works about 60 hours a week, so I don?t have a lot of time after taking care of the kids.

SE: I get that. What is your favorite thing to do when you aren?t writing or working?

AB: I read a lot in any bits of free time that I have, which is probably not surprising. My favorite is anything by Stephen King. I take my Kindle pretty much everywhere I go. I also like playing with my kids outside when the weather is nice.

SE: My Kindle is my best friend! So, what is your favorite color?

AB: My favorite color is probably black, if that counts, because it goes with everything. Turquoise is a close second.

SE: I love those two colors! Especially black! What is your favorite season?

AB: I used to love winter, but after last year when we had to shovel out of the artic hell that was our driveway, I would be happy to never see another snowflake. So I would say fall?I love Halloween and falling leaves and chilly air.

SE: Lol… oh I agree with you on the Artic Hell! If you could live anyplace on earth, where would it be?

AB: Probably in Hawaii or on an island, preferably one without tourists. Somewhere where I could walk right out to the ocean.

SE: Right there with ya! Although I lived in Hawaii for a little while and it is so expensive. Alright, now let’s talk a little about your writing! How long have your been writing? Was it a dream, a goal or is it just a hobby?

AB: I?ve been writing for as long as I can remember. My mom is an English teacher, so the importance of reading was always taught at home. I started writing stories when I was in Elementary school, and I remember one of the first ones was about two cat detectives, probably heavily influenced by Bunnicula. I continued to write all through my teenage years, mostly really bad poems, but I had a hard time finishing anything. I started writing Gravity in 2008 after I had my second baby, and started to plan how to get it published. When I found out about Kindle direct publishing I knew that was right for me.

SE: Very cool! How many hours a day do you devote to writing?

AB: About five altogether, but they are broken up into little chunks. I write in my kitchen so that I can do a little writing and then attend to all the household stuff at the same time. I have ADHD so I think it helps.

SE: lol.. sometimes that is a good thing! Do you have a set routine or do you write when the mood strikes?

AB: I have a set routine now because it helps me stay on track, but when I get an idea I like, I usually will write well after midnight. My most creative time is late at night, but I can?t stay up that late when I have to get up early.

SE: I always envy those who have set routines! Is there some place special you like to be when you write?

AB: I like to write the most on my couch. Nighttime is my favorite time, because everybody else is in bed and I can just settle in and relax. I find it easier to write with that atmosphere, too. It?s nice to write outside, too, because we live in a wooded area with trees all around. I?ll stay out there until my laptop battery is drained.

SE: I bet you make sure you keep your battery charged then to get the most out of your time. Do you listen to music or do you need a quiet place to write?

AB: For a rough draft, I always listen to music, but when I do a final draft or I?m editing, I need quiet. Sometimes I listen to white noise tracks, like fans and rain, and those help block out all the extra noise that?s distracting.

SE: I never through about the fan noise – that is a great white noise. So let’s talk about your books now. What is the name of it and is it part of a series or a stand alone novel?

AB: My latest book is part of a serial. It?s called Impossible Magic and it?s basically like Harry Potter for grown ?ups.

SE: COOL! Where did the idea come from?

AB: I just really like stories about boarding schools, and I love anything having to do with magic. I think witches have a lot of potential for interesting stories.

SE: Sounds good! What is it about?

AB: Blurb: ?Twenty-year-old Iris Archer’s life is going downhill–she’s having trouble at school, at her crappy job, and with her increasingly distant boyfriend. She’s ready for a change, but she never could have imagined the one that occurs. When she walks in on her boyfriend’s betrayal, it awakens a strong magical force inside of her. Frightened and confused, she runs off, only to be confronted by a mysterious woman named Paige who has some interesting news–Iris is a witch.

She is whisked away to a school hidden away from normal humans to hone her new magic. There she meets the insanely gorgeous but coldly arrogant necromancer Luke and a powerful attraction ignites between them. Even though Luke is a warden, and wardens and students are forbidden to be in a relationship, he’s always watching her with his sexy, impossibly dark eyes. Iris can’t decide whether she’s more attracted to or annoyed by his over-confident, controlling behavior.

At first, Iris’s new powers are intoxicating, until her control starts to break down. Luke makes her a provocative offer to help, but is it worth breaking the rules??

SE: Oh…. that sounds good! Do you have any upcoming projects in the works or other books that have been published?

AB: Currently I?m continuing to make episodes for Impossible Magic along with another serial, a ghost story called ?Haunted Things.? The second book in the Haunted Things series is called ?Forgotten Things? and will be out in July. I also have a few more projects in the works for the fall.

SE: Great! I wish you the best of success! Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope my readers enjoyed it and will look you up!

AB: Thanks again for interviewing me, I appreciate your time!

SE: You’re welcome!
